Columbia Shipmanagement (CSM) shows commitment to innovation and cutting-edge technology with trial of new internet service Starlink, created by technology disruptor Elon Musk. Leaders in innovation, the ship management arm of the Columbia Group, Columbia Shipmanagement, is conducting a trial of the new Starlink satellite internet service on a number of vessels. The Starlink service, provided by a constellation of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites operated by SpaceX, is designed to deliver reliable and high-speed internet connectivity to ships and vessels across all sectors of the maritime industry. The operational performance of a vessel is set to be boosted with an innovative new digital solution designed to provide a holistic ship management system that brings together the fragmented capabilities of data collection and analysis under one platform. The project, which is a collaboration between Columbia Shipmanagement (CSM), Blue Dynamics (BD) and the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), has been two years in the making and is due to be launched in July 2023. The project is co-funded by the European Union, and the Republic of Cyprus via the Research and Innovation Foundation. Schoeller Holdings shipowner still active as CEO reveals aims for 2023 and beyond. Schoeller Holdings has big plans for the future as it works on its succession planning. Chief executive Mark O’Neil told TradeWinds that the Cyprus-headquartered shipping group has used the past three years, which have been dominated by the pandemic, to sort out which of its businesses fitted where in the group. O’Neil has a dual role, having been CEO of parent Schoeller Holdings, which owns ships, since 2019, as well as CEO of ship management arm Columbia Group since 2017. The group is owned by Heinrich Schoeller, who set it up in 1978 and remains chairman of Columbia and executive chairman of Schoeller Holdings. “And long may that continue. It’s teamwork we have, and friendship,” O’Neil told TradeWinds.
